The requirement for rapid reorganisation in line with the expectations of the market is increasing all the time. An open plan solution is often chosen in order to provide organisational flexibility and promote communication between people. This allows the rapid distribution of information and at the same time strengthens the groups' feeling of community. The work environment must be designed in accordance with the most demanding activity to take place within that space.

Acoustics
  • An open plan solution allows shorter learning times for new staff or staff in new positions. Information, often in the form of conversations with colleagues, reaches more people. For some this may constitute unwelcome and disturbing noise. As a result, it is necessary to limit the horizontal distribution of sound in the open area.
  • The space is often full of computers and telephones, creating the requirement for a low level of background noise and the ability to control sound propagation between staff. Sound absorbing partitions can be used between work areas. An acoustic ceiling cuts down background noise levels, reduces sound propagation and is essential if partitions are to work well.
  • Because of the room’s size, it is important to be able to identify the source of a sound, as this helps define the space. An efficient acoustic ceiling is the answer.
Ecophon's suggestion
  • Maximum sound absorption, class A is required. Certain environments also require wall absorbers and increased low-frequency absorption.

Accessibility

  • A high degree of accessibility is required so that light fittings can be moved and workstations connected to electricity and data cables. Service installations require the ceiling to be fully demountable.
Light efficiency
  • High levels of light reflectance and diffusion help daylight extend further into an area. They also allow uplighting that facilitates computer work and permits flexibility in furnishing the room.
Product recommendation
  • Ecophon Combison Duo - to always achieve sound absorption class A, that reduces sound propagation and lowers background noise. Ecophon Combison Duo also allows absorbing partitions to function optimally in an open plan solution.
  • Ecophon Wall Panel - to increase sound absorption in certain environments.
NB: If in the future you intend to build a cellular office with flexible partitions in parts of the open plan solution, use Ecophon Combison Duo, which combines sound insulation and sound absorption and meets the requirements for sound absorption class A.
